  • Background in product safety testing
  • Ability to work effectively with our team overseas

Director of Mechanical Engineering - San Francisco

The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.
We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

Quirky brings new consumer products to market every week. Some of the best industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing experts come together to take ideas from concept to prototype - then to mass production - at a pace others said wasn’t possible.

Today you’ll find Quirky’s products on the shelves of major retailers such as Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Best Buy.

The Candidate:

Quirky is unlike any other product company.  We don’t spend a year debating product color or constantly changing scope.  A good idea gets prototyped, quickly vetted, and a solid plan is put in place to get it on shelves fast.   We achieve this by building a team of experienced, empowered product leaders.

You’ll lead our team of mechanical design engineers across NYC and San Francisco.    Our mechanical engineers look for innovative ways to manufacture some of the most creative consumer products.  Quirky engineers have access to some of the best prototyping tools, materials, and equipment for early concept validation.  The team then works with manufacturers in the US and overseas as we gear up for volume production.

In this role, you should bring a wide range of manufacturing process knowledge such as injection molding, metal stamping, machining, and electromechanical assemblies.   We make everything from pasta bowls to smart light bulbs, to connected air conditioners.

As Quirky grows, you’ll implement new processes for resource assignments, design version management, and engineering tooling reviews – but like all Quirky managers, you’re willing to reconsider the “old rules” - and design processes that keep our organization nimble, creative, and efficient.

As part of this role, you’ll manage the product prototyping lab in our new San Francisco engineering center.  Your team will have access to some of the top CNC, injection molding, and 3D printing equipment.

The position is based in Quirky’s new San Francisco engineering center with occasional travel to the New York product design headquarters.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience
  • A history of shipping reliable high-volume consumer products that customers love
  • Experience managing geographically distributed teams
  • Disciplined project management skills – tracking  20+ portfolio projects at once.
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing and prototyping processes – from injection molding, to CNC and 3D printing
  • Proficient in Pro/E
  • Experience with product safety and reliability standards
  • Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products.
  • Can interface with overseas manufacturing partners (ODMs or contract manufacturers) – with travel to these sites as necessary

The Application:

Submit your resume in PDF format and tell us about past project you shipped that you’re particularly proud of.

All of our engineers are involved in product idea prototyping, but this is what you’ll do everyday.

You’ll devour technology and component eval. kits.  The shipping departments at SparkFun, AdaFruit, DigiKey, and Mouser will know you on a first name basis because of your long order history.

If the design team has a question about the latest options for small OLED displays, you can quickly whip up a test board or demo rig to show off options from the top suppliers.  The next ask might be to evaluate options for audio, capacitive touch, NFC, or Bluetooth.

You’re an “organized hacker” – meaning that every prototype has documented details on suppliers, costs, risks, and instructions for integration.  To share this knowledge, you’ll coordinate weekly show-and-tell sessions for the organization to discuss technology explored by the team.  You’ll communicate with the external Quirky influencer community through blog posts and videos.

You’ll participate in early brainstorming discussions and concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in product designs.

After a year at Quirky, you’ll be able to walk through a major retail store and point to a dozen products that you helped bring to market.

The position can be based in Quirky’s new San Fracisco Bay Area engineering center, or the New York product design headquarters.

Qualifications:

  • You’re an “organized hacker” – your energy can be focused to explore technology needs related to the business.
  • Able to take a rough idea to a wired-up prototype incredibly fast
  • Both 8 and 32-bit embedded design experience
  • Experience with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or Beaglebone as a prototyping platform.
  • Excellent soldering skills with the ability to hand solder small packages such as 0603 or 0805 SMT components when necessary.
  • Experience writing firmware to interface with components over I2C, SPI, DMA, UARTs, and USB.
  • Proficient with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, communication bus scopes, etc.
  • Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products.

Extra Points:

  • Prior experience shipping products in the consumer electronics space
  • Prior experience working in a hardware R&D lab environment (commercial or academic)
  • Experience with Altium Designer and Solidworks
  • Experience writing firmware that interfaces with Camera CCDs, Displays, or RF/Wireless modules.

Sr. Electrical Engineer – Digital & Analog Systems - New York City

A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.

You’ll participate in early brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in the design.  Your engineering knowledge comes from prior products you’ve shipped along with a constant curiosity to evaluate new dev boards, modules, reference designs, and technologies.

As a product idea takes shape, you’re comfortable quickly iterating on proof-of-concept prototypes.  These prototypes will help the team evaluate risk, build a development schedule, and determine market interest in the product.

In execution mode, you’ll drive component selection, draw-up schematics, and participate in the peer-review of other designs from the team.  You will then take your design through to PCB layout.  With each PCB rev, you’ll be instrumental in board bring-up and debugging.

After a year at Quirky, you’ll be able to walk through a major retail store and point to a dozen products that you helped bring to market.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in embedded hardware design – preferably in consumer products
  • A history of reliable, shipping products
  • Both 8 and 32-bit embedded design experience
  • Experience interfacing sensors and subsystems over I2C, SPI, DMA, UARTs, and USB.
  • Proficient with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, communication bus scopes, etc.
  • Will take concepts through initial schematic design and PCB layout/routing.  (Altium Designer experience a plus)
  • Prior experience doing PCB layout that isolates power zones and minimizes noise/interference.
  • Comfortable context switching between a simple 8-bit design to complex 32-bit projects with wireless technologies, displays, or embedded Linux – all in the same week.
  • Ability to advise firmware engineers on low-level driver requirements to interface with displays, audio systems, wireless modules, or even motors.
  • Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products.
  • Can interface with overseas manufacturing partners (ODMs or contract manufacturers) – with travel to these sites as necessary.

Extra Points:

  • High-speed memory bus interfacing
  • Antenna selection and placement in wireless designs (PCB or chip antennas, vs external)
  • Prior projects that you’ve taken through FCC, CE, and EMI testing.
  • Experience interfacing with Camera CCDs, Displays, or RF/Wireless modules
  • Prior hardware designs using Android as the device operating system.
  • Demonstrated focus on power-sipping designs.
  • Prior experience with Altium Designer for PCB layout.
