The Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit copy for Quirky’s products (descriptions, inventor stories, potential names, packaging, etc.)
  • Write and edit topically relevant long-form and short-form copy for Quirky’s website, blog posts, weekly email blasts, email alerts, PR pieces, marketing materials, point of sale material, and more
  • Work closely with  other Quirky Storytellers and Community team to ensure consistent Quirky brand voice across all social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Tumbler, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and more.

The Qualifications:

  • You have 3+ years experience writing copy

  • You have an entertainment TV copywriting background (or have a proven track record at a well known creative agency)
  • You have written copy of consumer goods and/or lifestyle brands before
  • You demonstrate strong editorial judgment and writing ability
  • You have the ability to write compelling, accurate, catchy, on brand (smart/funny + mass appeal) and grammatically correct content at a prompt pace
  • You have a clever, witty, concise and attention-grabbing writing style
  • You are skilled at writing with a consistent voice across multiple channels, while being able to tailor the message and tone given the audience
  • You have a good grasp on popular culture and media and have the ability write topically relevant and timely commentary
  • You have an appetite for products, brands and design
  • You have proven success in a high growth, rapidly changing environment
  • You have an unrelenting intellectual curiosity and take pride in doing awesome work
  • You are a born leader and have a true entrepreneurial spirit
  • You have a passion for what we are doing at Quirky

The Application:

  • Check us out at www.quirky.com. Spend some time on our site understanding what we do. If you like what you see, please continue.
  • Submit your resume with a customized cover letter telling us why you want this job and why we should pick you.

We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

Quirky brings new consumer products to market every week. Some of the best industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing experts come together to take ideas from concept to prototype - then to mass production - at a pace others said wasn’t possible.

The Candidate:

A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.

All of our engineers are involved in product idea prototyping, but this is what you’ll do everyday.

Prototype Shop Manager, SMT/PCB & 3D Printers [SF] - San Francisco

The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.

Today you’ll find Quirky’s products on the shelves of major retailers such as Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Best Buy.

The Candidate:

Quirky is unlike any other product company.  We don’t spend a year debating product color or constantly changing scope.  A good idea gets prototyped, quickly vetted, and a solid plan is put in place to get it on shelves fast.

Our product engineers and designers look for innovative ways to manufacture some of the most creative consumer products.  Quirky engineers have access to some of the best prototyping tools, materials, and equipment for early concept validation.  The team then works with manufacturers in the US and overseas as we gear up for volume production.

As one of the most transparent product development companies, we showcase our prototyping capabilities and lab equipment – through regular live streams and public events right on the shop floor.

You will help spec, operate, and maintain the equipment and tools in our new San Francisco product prototyping lab.  This facility will be equipped with high-end machines such as a Haas 5-axis CNC mill, 3D printers, injection molding machine, and a PCB SMT line.

As shop manager for our SMT equipment + 3D printers, you’ll be the expert and typical operator of our short-run PCB SMT line.   You’ll work on-site with some of the best electrical engineers, and with our teams in New York and Hong Kong.   You’ll also support equipment and safety in our electrical engineering lab.

As part of our Quirky team, you’ll play an early role in brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered for a manufacturable experience.  You have a constant curiosity to evaluate new technologies and competitive products.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience with some of the equipment mentioned here
  • SMT machine experience (Samsung, Juki, Mydata)
  • Manual rework experience for fine-pitch components (BGAs, LGAs)
  • Altium experience (preferred)
  • Experience with Pro/E or Solidworks a plus
  • Experience operating 3D printers (Stratays Connex / Fortus)
  • Pride in equipment uptime and maintaining a safe and clean proto lab.
  • A curiosity in experimenting with new manufacturing processes and researching new equipment or tools.
  • Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products.

The Candidate:

How do you test a light bulb - and how would it be different than testing an Internet-connected air conditioner?

This isn’t one of those mind-teaser interview questions; it’s an example of the real challenges we’re faced with everyday at Quirky.

You’re willing to take on test plans for products as simple as a mixing bowl, to more complex products that have electronics and connected software. If the next Quirky idea is an internet connected gas grill, you’d better figure out what people, equipment, and processes we’d need to have in place to execute on the plan. Your team’s plan should also include regulatory compliance and tests so that nothing burns down.

You will play an early role in brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered for a quality experience. You have a constant curiosity to evaluate new technologies and competitive products.

The Qualifications:

  • Some experience in product testing, engineering, or support
  • Clear, efficient communication skills
  • Comfortable interacting within all levels of the organization
  • Comfortable context switching between plans to test a simple mixing bowl or power strip one day, to more complex products with wireless technologies, motors, or displays – all in the same week
  • Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products
  • You always keep the user and their experience in mind
  • Able to propose solutions, not just point out problems
  • Confidence to escalate critical issues when deadlines are near

Experience in any of the following areas:

  • Software testing (black box user-experience)
  • Product UX and out-of-the-box experience testing
  • Product drop testing and reliability
  • Packaging testing
  • Experience taking products through certifications: UL, CE, FCC, IC, ETL

The Candidate:

A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.

You’ll participate in early brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in the design.  Your engineering knowledge comes from prior products you’ve shipped along with a constant curiosity to evaluate new dev boards, modules, reference designs, and technologies.

In execution mode, you’ll drive component selection, draw-up schematics, and participate in the peer-review of other designs from the team.  You will then take your design through to PCB layout.  With each PCB rev, you’ll be instrumental in board bring-up and debugging.

After a year at Quirky, you’ll be able to walk through a major retail store and point to a dozen products that you helped bring to market.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in embedded hardware design – preferably in consumer products
  • A history of reliable, shipping products
  • Both 8 and 32-bit embedded design experience
  • Experience interfacing sensors and subsystems over I2C, SPI, DMA, UARTs, and USB.
  • Proficient with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, communication bus scopes, etc.
  • Will take concepts through initial schematic design and PCB layout/routing.  (Altium Designer experience a plus)
