Director of Mechanical Engineering - San Francisco

The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.
We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

Quirky brings new consumer products to market every week. Some of the best industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing experts come together to take ideas from concept to prototype - then to mass production - at a pace others said wasn’t possible.

Today you’ll find Quirky’s products on the shelves of major retailers such as Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Best Buy.

The Candidate:

Quirky is unlike any other product company.  We don’t spend a year debating product color or constantly changing scope.  A good idea gets prototyped, quickly vetted, and a solid plan is put in place to get it on shelves fast.   We achieve this by building a team of experienced, empowered product leaders.

You’ll lead our team of mechanical design engineers across NYC and San Francisco.    Our mechanical engineers look for innovative ways to manufacture some of the most creative consumer products.  Quirky engineers have access to some of the best prototyping tools, materials, and equipment for early concept validation.  The team then works with manufacturers in the US and overseas as we gear up for volume production.

In this role, you should bring a wide range of manufacturing process knowledge such as injection molding, metal stamping, machining, and electromechanical assemblies.   We make everything from pasta bowls to smart light bulbs, to connected air conditioners.

As Quirky grows, you’ll implement new processes for resource assignments, design version management, and engineering tooling reviews – but like all Quirky managers, you’re willing to reconsider the “old rules” - and design processes that keep our organization nimble, creative, and efficient.

As part of this role, you’ll manage the product prototyping lab in our new San Francisco engineering center.  Your team will have access to some of the top CNC, injection molding, and 3D printing equipment.

The position is based in Quirky’s new San Francisco engineering center with occasional travel to the New York product design headquarters.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience
  • A history of shipping reliable high-volume consumer products that customers love
  • Experience managing geographically distributed teams
  • Disciplined project management skills – tracking  20+ portfolio projects at once.
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing and prototyping processes – from injection molding, to CNC and 3D printing
  • Proficient in Pro/E
  • Experience with product safety and reliability standards
  • Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products.
  • Can interface with overseas manufacturing partners (ODMs or contract manufacturers) – with travel to these sites as necessary

The Application:

Submit your resume in PDF format and tell us about past project you shipped that you’re particularly proud of.

You are constantly thinking of ways to make the Quirky wheels run more quickly and efficiently. You live in the NYC/SF area, but you work in three different time zones (New York, San Francisco and China). You have a way with people, and prefer collaboration to independent research. You thrive in an environment where there are no walls and prefer to over-communicate and think out loud, raising concerns and bouncing ideas off of others at any time.

The Job:

As our Program Manager, you will

  • Be a member of Quirky's Product team reporting to Quirky's Manager of Program Management
  • Manage product development projects from concept to store shelves
  • Act as the main source for updates and communication regarding product development, production & manufacturing, partners, and vendors
  • Be a part of a growing movement to make invention accessible.

The Responsibilities:

  • Manage complex schedules with dependencies
  • Collaborate with an international team located in New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong and more.
  • Help organize and lead teams through the Design, Engineering and Manufacturing processes for new product development.
  • Ensure every aspect of product development is executed flawlessly by interfacing between multiple teams in the U.S. and overseas: Mechanical Engineering, Quality Assurance, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Packaging Development, Creative Operations, Sourcing, Logistics, Retail Operations, and more.
  • Work with Quirky’s sourcing team and Program Management team overseas to determine which manufacturer gets awarded the project.
  • Collaborate with Quirky’s Product Management team to review product line quotes, determine cost saving measures, and lock down product specifications.
  • Work closely with Product Management, CTO, and Engineering functional heads team to ensure that product specifications are executed according to plan.
  • Build strong partnerships with existing and new suppliers
  • Communicate with manufacturers to negotiate pricing, payment terms, tooling and production schedules, pay invoices, and more.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, seeking decisions from key stakeholders as needed
  • Oversee tight development schedules through a team effort
  • Scrutinize product quality, analyze quality control reports, and review customer feedback, in detail, to determine if corrective action is needed
  • Manage multiple product development schedules and work independently
  • Maintain a design-oriented culture with a focus on bringing the best ideas to market with the best quality
  • Work closely with Demand Planning to understand the timing of when product is needed

This isn’t one of those mind-teaser interview questions; it’s an example of the real challenges we’re faced with everyday at Quirky.

You’re willing to take on test plans for products as simple as a mixing bowl, to more complex products that have electronics and connected software. If the next Quirky idea is an internet connected gas grill, you’d better figure out what people, equipment, and processes we’d need to have in place to execute on the plan. Your team’s plan should also include regulatory compliance and tests so that nothing burns down.

You will play an early role in brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered for a quality experience. You have a constant curiosity to evaluate new technologies and competitive products.

The Qualifications:

  • Some experience in product testing, engineering, or support
