The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.

Quirky brings new consumer products to market every week.  Some of the best industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing experts come together to take ideas from concept to prototype - then to mass production - at a pace others said wasn’t possible.

  • Maintain wood-working and rapid prototyping equipment
  • Organize and streamline the shop process, by identifying ways of improving the tools/space

Freelance Electrical Engineer (Hardware, REMOTE) - Remote

The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.
We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

We are looking for a hardware electrical engineer freelancer to work remote or from our SF or NY office.

The Candidate:

A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.

As a hardware electrical engineer freelancer, you’ll participate in brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in the design.  Your engineering knowledge comes from prior products you’ve shipped along with a constant curiosity to evaluate new dev boards, modules, reference designs, and technologies.

As a product idea takes shape, you’re comfortable quickly iterating on proof-of-concept prototypes.  These prototypes will help the team evaluate risk, build a development schedule, and determine market interest in the product.

In execution mode, you’ll drive component selection, draw-up schematics, and participate in the peer-review of other designs from the team.  You will then take your design through to PCB layout.  With each PCB rev, you’ll be instrumental in board bring-up and debugging.

Qualifications:

  • Embedded hardware design experience – preferably in consumer products
  • A history of reliable, shipping products
  • Both 8 and 32-bit embedded design experience
  • Experience interfacing sensors and subsystems over I2C, SPI, DMA, UARTs, and USB.
  • Will take concepts through initial schematic design and PCB layout/routing.  (Altium Designer experience a plus)
  • Prior experience doing PCB layout that isolates power zones and minimizes noise/interference.
  • Comfortable context switching between a simple 8-bit design to complex 32-bit projects with wireless technologies, displays, or embedded Linux – all in the same week.

Sr. Firmware Engineer [Wireless] - San Francisco Bay Area

The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.
We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

Quirky brings new consumer products to market every week.  Some of the best industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing experts come together to take ideas from concept to prototype - then to mass production - at a pace others said wasn’t possible.

Today you’ll find Quirky’s products on the shelves of major retailers such as Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Best Buy.

The Candidate:

A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.

You’ll participate in early brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in the design.  Your engineering knowledge comes from prior products you’ve shipped along with a constant curiosity to evaluate new dev boards, modules, and technologies.

As a product idea takes shape, you’re comfortable quickly iterating on proof-of-concept prototypes.  These prototypes will help the team evaluate risk, build a development schedule, and determine market interest in the product.

You’ll then help architect rock-solid reliable firmware that will make new PCB designs come to life every week.  The satisfaction in seeing your device driver code run on a new board – and watching the status LED blink as expected - brings a celebratory tear to your eye.

After a year at Quirky, you’ll be able to walk through a major retail store and point to a dozen products that you helped bring to market.

The position is based in Quirky’s new San Francisco Bay Area engineering center.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in embedded application or device driver development
  • A history of reliable, shipping products
  • Comfortable context switching between bare-metal C code on one project, to Linux device drivers, RTOS based app designs, or even interpreted languages on the next project – all in the same week.

The Job:

This is a new role for a new world. We are setting out to study, develop, and spread new ways of working and organizing that will define how leading organizations operate in the 21st century. It’s part coach and guide: you’ll work closely with ambitious client teams to take their performance to the next level, and help them navigate the future of work. It’s part explorer and mapmaker: you’ll confront problems that others don’t see, and design solutions that change organizations and cultures from the bottom up. It’s part consultant and trusted advisor: you’ll tackle complex challenges facing some of the world’s largest businesses and have the opportunity (from day one) to work with senior leaders to shape the future.

The Qualifications:

Working as a consultant focused on the future of work is a relatively new occupation. You probably didn’t go to school for it. You probably don’t have 5+ years experience doing it. You might not already have it on your resume. And that’s ok. Before the rest of us started here, we had little more than a hunch that our true calling might be solving some of the biggest organizational challenges of the 21st century.

Got a feeling that helping ambitious organizations to become more responsive is for you? Here are some clues that you may be cut out for this line of work:

  • You are a systems thinker who can’t help but see how things are connected.
  • You are passionate about empowering teams of people to do their best work, together.
  • You are an expert communicator who can make complex concepts easy for others to understand.
  • You have a strong bias for action, and prefer to start by doing (rather than by planning).
  • You are relentlessly curious, always geeking out about something new, and always trying to find a better way.
