We’re Developing a Line of Apple Accessories… Overnight

posted ago by baron

Today, as of 1pm ET, Apple revealed the design specs for the new iPhone 5. With the introduction of a new dock connector and form factor, six years worth of iPhone accessories just became obsolete. Time to get busy, Quirky community.

To make sure that we get a head start on the coming iPhone 5 accessory boom, we’re taking a page from our own book by kicking off a lightning-fast development process, starting right now.

Here’s what you need to know:

- We’ve pushed into a new product category: Apple Accessories. Effective immediately, ideas can be submitted in this category for free (no coupon code required!). See Ben’s awesome blog post for more information on our new vertical strategy, and what it means for Quirky.

- Tomorrow, after a day of whirlwind idea submission, we’ll be judging the best Apple Accessory submissions at a very special Eval (7pm ET).

- After our newest inventors have been selected, a real-time design workshop will begin, with Quirky designers and members collaborating round-the-clock to design and refine each invention pick into a final Quirky product.

- On Saturday, Ben Kaufman himself will fly the results (3D models, renders) of this design process to our factories, and the products will be released soon after through an exclusive sale on Fab.com.

We realize that there is still a lot left to be explained, but fret not. We’ll be posting constant updates over the next few days to keep you in the loop: by all accounts, this is shaping up to be one doozy of a project. However, all great projects start with an idea, so head to the new Apple Accessories page to start submitting your own! We’re crazy excited to see what you come up with.

a flexible wand (like an endoscope) with a light & camera that sends the images via Bluetooth to the iPhone and possibly out to others anywhere. Great for engineers, service technicians, DIY enthusiasts, emergency services.

A protective back for the iPhone with cutouts on the back and inserts for small items such as scissors, tweezers, magnifier & toothpick. There are hundreds of thousands of app's for the iPhone, but you can't download something to take a splinter out of your childs finger or cut a piece of string.

Hey Tim. Submit your ideas here: http://www.quirky.com/ideas/apple

how do you protect these "quick ideas"?

  • MattyL

"We realize that there is still a lot left to be explained, but fret not. We’ll be posting constant updates over the next few days" Oh Really? The contest starts and ends TOMORROW, and you'll get us info in THE NEXT FEW DAYS? Sounds like someone's smoking some crack over there. Or, more likely, you're more concerned with making a quick buck than actually getting some well thought out products.

  • Gaetano Marano

... also ... are, ALL the ideas submitted, published for evaluation, OR there will be a selection and only few of them will be shown on Quirky?

  • Jayson Matthews

A simple device that turns the iPhone into an Android. Heyahhhh!

  • Ann Ellison

Shock & drop proof as well as waterproof. Makes it good for all occupations and weather conditions.

  • Nathaniel Padgett

@Gaetano - we have an FAQ page relating to intellectual property, here: http://www.quirky.com/about/ip @MattyL - We are choosing ideas for development tomorrow night, designing through to Friday, and starting manufacturing over the weekend. The event will last longer than a single day, hence us saying that we will publish updates over the next couple days.

  • Make it out of materials cheap enough that I could buy it!!!

  • Let it have a belt clip too......Belt clips are cool.......

  • Robert Stabbert

Simply a phone protector that allows for a few credit cards and a bill to be slid into place. Why carry a wallet and a phone?

  • yao c

develop a solar panel thats plyable for recharging that will attach to the backside or incasing whatever apple devices but will look or act like a skin?

  • Lisa Whitehouse

Flash drive with a USB connection on one side and I-phone/I-pad connection on the other so you can quickly back-up and store songs and other info.

  • Mark Eastwood

I would say making a shock proof case that acts as a wallet. Holds IDs, cash, credit cards. Possibly water proof without making it to bulky. Possibly a key holder???? Something that is a catch all when you have all you need in one location.

  • Jocelyne Denault

When it's shock proof and doesn't need a case anymore... make it phosphorescent (lighting in the dark) so that us ladies can find it super fast in our bags full of stuff.

They already have several IPhone cases on the market that hold credit cards etc. on or it the case, so keep thinking! I think one idea great for the IPAD is make a compatible device to allow you to run disk or install from disk. Computers to some degree are becoming more obsolete and not being able to do this really limits the IPAD's degree of use at College or place of Business.

A set of small wheels. Allows for autonomy. Can use camera to capture room while traversing. Cameras on both sides of phone will record mission. Also being able to record lay out of the room and all its obstacles while on patrol. Plot and record with 3D play back of route. Check out live on from web cast or facetime and take control of the device and explore for yourself.

An IPhone Clamp that attaches and charges your IPhone while you lay in bed. If your lying down, you could eaily put it on the clamp to view movies. Instead of holding the phone while you skype or watch movies at night. This clamp will ease the stress off people's arms while lying down and using the phone at the same time.

    Let's do this

  • Rick Gamboa

Ricardo Gamboa IPhone having a 3D hologram capability allowing the user’s to view stored video clips, photos, and specific types of data information via the ILogram adapter.

  • Han Lim

NFC module that attaches to iPhone 5 and acts as a cover at the same time.

  • Rick Gamboa

Ricardo Gamboa IPhone having the wireless capability to transmit visual data to an IPhone Projector unit, for viewing video clips. Photo, slideshow presentation, and data graphics via portable projection module. Allow the user to make presentation of IPhone data on the big screen without wire connections. The IProjection module can operate via batteries or a build in solar panel. The IProjection unit should be the size of an IPhone (slightly thicker). Activation of the IProjector commences by pressing down on the “Open,” icon at the elongated edge of the unit. The edge will pop up allowing the projection unit to start activation. The IPhone will transmit data once the IProjection app is activated on the IPhone and in sync with the projection unit. The IProjector should have the maximum projection capability as current portable projection unit on the market.

My idea is very confidential. After reading all these ideas, i noticed no one has mine. My idea is unique, innovative, and it solves many problems. And it wont be complicated to manufacture. I think it could be the winner. I would love to disclose my idea to the revision team before they submit all the other ideas. So they can include mine as well. To get more information on the NEW APPLE ACCESSORY PLEASE call me @ 562-674-8824 or email me at bestbusiness4you@hotmail.com Thanks

I like the idea of a clip on additional speaker...to enhance the use of my Macbook Pro when I use it with a group or just to enjoy my own music. It could charge with a USB plug into the computer. Maybe slip over the black border...surround sound for the Mac!!

Hi guys, If you take a look at one of my previous submissions; it was a mobile app. for radar location via a mobile phone, to locate and avoid obstacles for visually impaired people. It can also be applied in unlit areas for anybody to locate and direct themselves. Some research I've done on nano tech. and transceivers can now be manufactured taking up an area of 2mmx2mm. Best wishes on your project. Paul
