Naturally Cool: Introducing… Terra
posted ago by baron
Terra is an auto-cooling carafe inspired by the technology of the Botijo, a traditional Spanish water vessel. The container is made of a porous clay, which allows small amounts of water to pass through its surface and “perspire”, cooling the liquid within without the need for icepacks or insulation. This process can reduce the temperature of water by 18° F (10° C), providing clean and cool hydration wherever you go, whether you’re camping in the wild or just out on the deck. With a cork cap for a tight seal, and a press-fit glass for drinking on the go, Terra is a low-tech solution that stands up to the best our century has to offer.
Reminiscing on the botijos he used as a child during scorching Mexican summers, inventor Rodolfo Ham-Zhu wanted to update this timeless concept for the 21st-century consumer. 3730 community influencers shared their input to refine its final form, which can now be ogled in Quirky’s Upcoming section. Head there now to see more shots of Terra in action, and to help us determine its price.

Job well done on the design. Can't wait to try one out.

Looks great. Am interested in trying this out. Not sure how the "sweating" aspect will affect anything around it if you put it in a back pack. But, for simple table use, I'd love to have it.

Well, I might enjoy a 72 degree drink of water on a 90 degree day...except ice, refrigerators, thermoses, and cooler water than that out of the tap are all readily available to me. So this is not for me.

Great idea! Botijos works great cooling water, and this design is a great actualization of the traditional concept! congratulations to all the people involved!
