Invention Demystified: Product Timelines Have Arrived

Posted ago by Baron

Thanks to our all-star Tech team, Quirky’s website features one of the most in-depth collaboration platforms anywhere, enabling members to participate in everything from product evaluation and design to market research and branding. However, with so many projects and activities to choose from, things can get a little overwhelming, which is why we’ve rolled out a brand new feature to help keep everything in line (literally). It’s called the Product Development Timeline, and it’s going to change your life.

Simply put, the timeline tracks a product through the entire development process, from its selection at Eval to its retail debut. Using a handy navigation bar at the top of the page, you can scroll down through a product’s full history, viewing details on each individual project as you go along. Key data like winning submissions and top community picks is shown directly on the timeline, but members can also navigate to each project page with the simple click of a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

But wait, there’s more! In addition to easier project management, the timeline turns up the dial on transparency, featuring never-before-seen data and insights from the Quirky staff. The top of each timeline tracks a host of statistics in real time (shown below), including the number of units sold, total community payouts, and the average payout per unit. We’ve also begun recording the designers, engineers, and other staff members who worked on each product, letting inventors and influencers know exactly who they’re collaborating with.

Transparency has also been boosted on the project level, as each project node on the timeline includes a special feedback section, where Quirky staffers can elaborate on the details of an individual phase. Thus, if the Creative team decides to choose a name with fewer votes, or if a product’s tooling is delayed during manufacturing, you’ll hear the reasoning directly from the source. No more guessing, period. Additionally, the Invention Ambassadors have been tirelessly updating each product’s timeline with a host of insider info (below). These include behind-the-scenes photos, promo videos, and updates on engineering/manufacturing, giving online members a better look at the internal workings that help bring these products to life.

Images can’t do these timelines justice, so we strongly recommend that you take a moment to peruse them for yourself. The timelines for Drift and Silo are two great places to start, but you can view the timeline for any product in the Shop or Upcoming section via this handy button:

These new product timelines will serve as the primary page for any products in development, so dive in and let us know what you think! We hope you like what you see.

This all is great, but Timeline lacks a list of influencers (just turn INFLUENCERS into a link that leads to http://quirky.com/users/browse?product=...). Also I found it more convenient in the old version to be able to navigate from Naming to Tagline phase without returning to Participate or Timeline page - see what I mean?

Very Cool! Will Quirky be bringing back the Top 10 Leader board for each product? This previously showed not only what the top 10 influencers had earned from the product, but what they were getting per direct and indirect unit sold. This current timeline solution just seems to provide a running average...which is better than nothing, but I think it is fascinating to know not only the difference in direct and indirect royalty payouts, but also the sales stats on direct and indirect purchases. It's fun to see how some products sell well online but not nearly as well in brick & mortar retail and vice versa.
