Does anyone actually search before they submit?

I just joined recently and think this is a great idea but holy crap...does anyone actually search their idea before they submit it? I like to help and offer suggestions but I find myself leaving comments like "I have one of these" or "google 'xxx'"

I agree with you Steve....I have only been a member for a few DAYS! And I see the same thing over and over..tons of products that already exist. I know sometimes its hard to research everything, but jeez, some of these ideas are on shelves right NOW!

I have a cool invention that not many people here know about......
wanna know what it is......
Its called "Web Search" give it a try! You may not like what you find but, you can save your $10 and everyone's time looking at something that has been around for years!

Whew...glad I'm not the only one. The problem I see is that the good ones get lost in the mass display of crap.

Hi Steve, I'm a newbie too - here's what I just posted on a similar question:
A LOT of these problems would be solved if Q wasn't so quick to rake in all those $10 duplicate ideas at the very beginning of the process. It would be so easy to have a countdown process in the submission section - it may go something like this.
"Welcome to Quirky and thank you for your submission, before finalizing your submission please go through these last few steps to check for similar or duplicate inventions".

If the person has a kitchen gadget, a popup will say "We have 2362 submissions for kitchen gadgets - would you like to search for a similar product using our keyword search?

A series of questions like these would make things much smoother later in the process.

The final statement, just above where you click to finalize your submission and send Quirky $10 should state:

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CHECK FOR A DUPLICATE IDEA, IF AN IDEA IDENTICAL TO YOURS IS FOUND AFTER YOUR SUBMISSION, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A REFUND.

If Quirky was really interested in a better process, they would make these changes - even though it would slow down the money stream.

John, a good suggestion. Also, having people look in the Q shop and the upcoming section would be useful for weeding out many ideas to see if their idea is being designed or sold already.
-
Unfortunately, even if you put those stopgaps in place, People will ignore them.
-
I don't see Q changing it up much as they already post what they will and won't make so it's the submitters responsibility to do their due diligence. If they want to submit a product that doesn't fit Q's model, then at that point it's on them for spending their $10 and it isn't Q's fault so why should they change a system that gives them a steady revenue stream from peoples lack of due diligence or laziness?

Yep, I pretty much agree with you Marc... and I kick myself in the butt for doing what so many other new people do. I went right to the submission section... and learned about the search feature after I became more familiar with the site.
All said, I still like this place... maybe that's why I want other people to have a good first impression.

I like the idea John. I would suggest upping the anty to $100.00 for submissions...that should weed out the insane and inane. If someone is truly serious about their invention or idea, $100 is nothing.

btw, I've started to post "Seroiusly, you paid $10.00 to submit this?"

Oh, odd thing...I paid $0.00 to submit my idea. There was a discount code for this site posted a few days back for a $10.00 discount on all purchases. turns out it worked for submitting ideas as well. maybe that's why the recent influx?

Yeah, fool me once and all that. Most people are excited and just dive right in. Been guilty of that myself. For the uninitiated, the site is a little tough to navigate and it certainly could be designed better for the first time visitor/submitter.
-
Don't really know the solution other than to try to educate people better before they hit submit.

Steven, that would be my guess as well on the majority of these recent submission. They have some type of free code.
-
Q used to charge something like $90-100 per idea in the beginning days but dropped it to $10.00. I think raising it to $20 or $25 would be a better number than $100. It is high enough to stop the silly ideas and make people think twice but not high enough (hopefully for most people who are serious about their idea) to be able to submit. I know at $100, I would probably stop submitting or at least only submit 1 or 2 times during the year.
-
For $100 though, they better have some more stringent rules in place for duplicates and influence, etc...

I think you guys hit the nail on the head - am I the only one who didn't know I could have posted my first idea for free? LOL
And why would anyone spend hours researching their idea when they can post it for free and have someone else tell them whether it's already been done. I think the $20 or $25 sounds just about right. And ABSOLUTELY No freebies without at least going through an in-house search of related ideas.

The interesting part is that we all joined up for reason. Collaboration of ideas and the ultimate potential of getting our ideas out into the marketplace. There ARE some phenomenal ideas out there and they solve problems, are unique, and are most definitely marketable.

The problem is, they may never get viewed by the serious people on this site. ie. I have come to realize that the people that use the forums tend to be serious. However, there is no way to know for sure and I can't find a way (yet) to easily see the contributors inventions.

In other words, I would love to see what you people have invented but how without pimping (totally against that unless in the pimping thread!)

Steven, if you click on a persons avatar it will take you to their profile. At the bottom left hand side it will show all the products they have influenced. If anyone has 35% influence it means their idea was picked and is either now for sale or in the upcoming section. That will at least let you see some of the things people have won with. Some people will also provide links to their currently running ideas in the top portion of the profile. Not everyone does this but it is at least a place to start if you are trying to find out more about people and their ideas. You can also try the search feature and type in a persons name/alias and see what comes up. Hope that helps.
