I WANT TO BE THE FIRST TO APOLOGIZE/SELF-DEFENSE RING
http://www.quirky.com/ideations/146308
I was one of the first ones to leave a joke on this idea...but I have to say, after reading through all the comments - While, I think some are funnny...I can get a real sense that this idea comes from the heart and maybe some are a little harsh with the comments?
any Thoughts...
Its a controvertial product, lets start with that. I wish quirky could find a partner for it and everyone made money on it, it has potential. Do I think it belongs in the quirky product line up? No. A little humor is fine, we should be able to handle that. I didnt see anything really offensive.
Here are just some of the comments... I see that other community members are chiming in - in his defense. (Like I said - I poked fun too...just making conversation!)

You guys need to use your imaginations a little...haven't you noticed...Q almost never makes a product even remotely similar to the original idea?? Try picturing a ring with just a few tiny sharp dimples, for scratching; that's not going to kill anybody, but could be useful in an attack. Or just some type of jewelry in general that could be used for self defense. Sheesh...lay off a little

I dont think anyone should be trying to put their reservations on to another person. I think that if Quirky decides to make this, it will be because they believe it will make money. I personaly dont think it will, but it is not for me to say.
I am reading all of these sarcastic comments and realising that the same arguments against this item are simmilar to those against guns.
My oppinion;
A MAN WITH A GUN IS A CITIZEN, A MAN WITHOUT A GUN IS A SUBJECT.
The police can not protect you, protect your self, with any means at your disposal......me, I carry a gun, some carry a knife, others use batons or knuckles.
Unfortunatly most people are sheep and just wait for ”big brother” to protect them

Self righteous sheeple. This is an idea site. Where we are supposed to give, and try to sell our ideas. Quirky is supposed to pick ideas they thinkwill sell. This should not be a political site where the masses should impose there political views. Comments should be restricted to market ability, and proffitability. Or, if you have an idea to improve upon the original. Dont be a bunch of haters.
If you have ever been a woman or even a man in this sort of position I think it would be appreciated. Every second counts; grabbing for pepper spray takes too long. Its a great solution for a crappy reality.
Until it is forced against the victim and she is paralyzed and gets raped and is not even able to fight back. Or what if you stab yourself accidentally, or your child does?
I dont think they could legally use anything to paralyze someone. that would be like me carrying a taser....... Needs to be refined but I like where the self defense item is located. It wouldnt be something worn all the time either.
I worry more about an unbalanced person wearing one of these on a crowded subway, bus or sports/concert venue. They could "stick" several people around them, and probably never be detected as the perpetrator.
Elle is dead on. They're not going to make a weapon, but the idea of some kind of additional self defense ring (maybe it signals your phone to dial 911 when removed?), or small concealed device is interesting. I wonder if it failed if Q would be any more liable than if say pivot power failed. If so, not a great idea to expose Q to that kind of risk.
Also, it could be they wanted to educate everyone on why that kind of item won't fly, or could have just been added to confuse and get the community to think creatively. I wouldn't discount either of those.
Sometimes, when I've had to walk through a dangerous area and felt vunerable, I've carried my car keys in my hand with the keyring in the palm and one of the keys sticking out between my ring finger and middle finger. I surmise that I could do a lot of damage to a would-be attacker with that key. Maybe this project is just the thing to inspire us to come up with something similar ... not necessarily marketed as a concealed weapon (which may be illegal), but something fully and reasonable functionable otherwise that could just happen to be used defensively. It is a possible gray area, legally speaking.
.
Just a thought. Any experts in concealled carry laws out there?
@Ike exactly, I do the same thing with my keys. There are times when you dont have a choice. There are UV identifying sprays that could be worked in somehow... lots of possibilities. Just keep an open mind about this one. There are a lot of unbalanced people in this world carrying a lot worse than this.
I was one to leave the first comment, I stand behind what I said, if it's a 911 ring from a pointed weapon, we are way off as to why we are here, ok, maybe as to why I am here. Give someone else a chance to have a real idea be picked that may save lives, and actually have a dagger sticking out of something that could put our kids in danger, animals, and false alarms is really just terrible.
As pointed out earlier this device would be illegal in most states. It is also illegal to tote something along such a golf club or baseball bat intended as an offensive weapon. A walking stick (or cane) can serves the same purpose but is not illegal.

Imagine my surprise when I researched this issue due to fact I wanted something to keep unleashed dogs at bay when I was walking my dog.
I thought this was originally a joke that was submitted by someone. Apparently it wasn't. What I find offensive in the submission is that it made it to UC while other very worthwhile submissions did not.
Get rid of the dagger and substitute an ear wax cleaner and it might have some potential. I designed a ear canal cleaner for my uncle and he was very pleased. The boomers represent a large market segment with significant disposable income.
