Sol Mate -- Ray done right.

SolMate Solar Powered iPhone Charger

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1256361908/iphones-solmate-solar-powered-aluminum-casing-on-s

Here's a classic example of somebody taking a Quirky idea off on their own, tweaking it and branding it and even using one of the names our community came up with . . .

http://www.quirky.com/ideations/108025

I understand that this is the Internet and all, but there should be some kind of assertions on Quirky's part here. This Kickstarter project is new, and the original RAY is older than that. . . but they're slightly different. So something tells me getting this out first and fast will be of mondo importance. I actually like the name SolMate better than Ray, and I like the concept better, too.

But I think that the whole SOLAR POWERED thing is going to be big going forward, so if Quirky plays things right going forward, it might have a chance to create a new niche and compete competitively.

It says "In mid 2010, ... From that day on, we have been working to develop an effective solar charging solution that combines high-quality hardware and smart software in a design that complements the most iconic smartphone in the world: The iPhone. "

Maybe, maybe not. . . . that's just a statement, not proof. The only proof is this Kickstarter project which is newer. :)

EDIT: it looks like it was the greensimian company that was created circa 2010, and no telling when they adopted the SolMate name . . . in any case (pardon the pun), Ray has some competition!

iPhone solar cases are a dime a dozen. A google search would return hundred of hits ready for your shopping cart. The name SolMate seems rather easy to come up on your own. Me thinks plain'ol simple coincidence.

People normally think that they are more original and clever than they really are, culture has much more to do with ideas than the people that come up with them. A good book out there that speaks to this is "What Technology Wants."

How many Chinees companies are following Q do you think? And taking every good idea of the site, bringing it within a few weeks on the international market for just a few dollars?

I agree with ScubaEd.
Small personal solar chargers are a dime-a-dozen.
Ray's "claim to fame" is that it sticks to the window.
SolMate isn't much more related to Ray than the 2012 Toyota Prius...they all use the common idea of solar charging in different ways.

While Quirky is kinda in loopy land right now (where the culture is, "your brownies are a copy of my chocolate chip cookies because I used flour and chocolate first"), don't make the mistake of believing that magical thinking applies beyond the Quirky walls.

@Bjorn,
Far, far fewer than those following the announcements of new patents and applications from the Patent office.
Far, far, far fewer than the number looking through Amazon.com for products that sell well.

Yeah, maybe. I only found out about this because one of the people I work with told me about this company her friend started to do this. . . and I was pretty surprised to see something that I knew I'd seen before on Quirky. She knows the people personally and the impression that she gave me is that it was something they'd just started.

The name I do love, though.

@Clinton

It was a combination of the name and the idea. No need to be Mr. Negative Pants all the time.

oops - sorry.
Any negativity is certainly aimed at the system...

Ray's claim to fame isn't just the suction. A second intention, of several, is universal compatibility. Furthermore, the idea of placing your iPhone in direct sunlight bothers me, and will always bother me. I'm pretty surprised that nobody has mentioned this... both on that Kickstarter pitch and in this thread. Mophie's Juicepack is on its 7th generation, and still hasn't touched the solar concept. Probably for good reason. I have owned two generations of iPhones, and they are extremely sensitive to overheating. I left my wife's in the window sill of our AIR CONDITIONED RV for a little over an hour and it self-powered off because of the direct sunlight. The firmware doesn't allow you to turn the thing back on until it has reached it's desired operating temperature. Warning message and all when you try. Crazy stuff. Good luck SolMate. I'll admit, I did like the name more.
