I largely agree with the comments above - I just can't see a huge market, and am a little confused by the mock-up. Josh if you resubmit you might consider doing a couple of different drawings just to explain things - or you could post some more now by hosting them somewhere else then linking to them here.
I have a very basic grasp on physics. Where there is magnetism, there is electrical current. Placing magnets near an iPhone, which has a capacitive touchscreen, may hinder or incapacitate the phone all together.
I don't know exactly how the iPhone senses the touches other than it is capacitive. Just something to keep in mind when determining magnet placement and magnet strength.
The only thing this would be protecting your phone from while on a call is getting makeup and oil from your face on the screen. That's good but it just replaces the problem w/the case getting it instead & the phone's screen is a lot easier to wipe off. I don't think many people like flip cases judging by the market. Like others have said, many people need to use the phone while on a call. This product is for people who like flip cases and don't want the case open while they're talking on the phone. That's a pretty small group! My only advise is, if this gets made, have a non-leather option for vegans. Now THAT is something hard to find in good cases!
Yes it is one segment of the market, but I don't know that it is the minority. I know over 100 people who own iphones and more than half of them have flip cases. Maybe this is unique, but there is still a large market none the less. Over 45 million iphone users. If even only 25% of them used flip cases that is a potential market of 12 million users and growing every day.
If the case is supposed to be thin (assumably), won't the magnetic connector make that part of the case thicker? I think it will feel a little funny across your cheek.
A recommendation - make the connectors on the edge of the screen (the perimeter) rather than in the middle of the screen, so that when you flip open the case, you see the whole screen, rather than have a strip of material dividing up the screen. It will retain the look of the screen when it's flipped open.
You could get a very thin button shaped magnet for each corner and place it on the inside of the flap under the middle layer. it would not be noticeable. Good idea about the inside of the case. I agree with your idea.
Hi Joshua. The perfect case is a great idea, but this seems to me to be a super saturated market. I would be curious to see how many cell phone owners hate their cases, and how many hate them enough to take the time to buy a new one. Since cases are so readily available, most are also quite cheap. What do you imagine the profit margin on this could be?
I agree that there is a saturated market, but they are all pretty much the same. I think with a good selection of styles this could be a case that brovides some conveniance that is missing from other cases on the market. Well I guess that profit margin all depends on the selling price of the case. I would put the selling price at around $30-35. Profit margins could be easily above 50%. The materials are pretty basic, a faux leather material on the outside and soft material on the inside with a thin plastic layer in the middle for rigidity, and the Pre-cut layers sewn together. I think this could be a product that would have a high return on profit.
I'm pretty confused by this idea.I have had a few cases that completely covered the screen before, but they were 100% usable and dirt cheap, $5. They were either all clear plastic, or a soft case with a clear screen section. The iPhone/Pod has a surprisingly strong sensor. All you need is a way for the electrical current in your hand to be passed through tot he screen. A study showed that you could use an iPhone/Pod with a piece of orange skin between your finger and the screen because it carried the current.
I'm a little confused? How would you be able to see the caller ID? I like the concept, I hate using my phone after holding it my face. But sometimes I need to get to other applications during the call, like the calendar. How about a side flap, like a book? I hate using BT but seems to be the most reasonable way to be able to talk and see the screen.
With this case you would use it like a regular flip case, except for the fact that you could close the flap and continue talking on the phone. I have always liked the extra protection that a flip case provides for the screen, but they have drawbacks. This is taking that design a step further. imagine that you are walking down Main Street on a busy lunch day and a client calls. You open the cover to answer your call and then close the flap and continue your conversation. Some bike messenger bumps into you and your phone flys out of your hand, no worries because the flap was closed and the screen was protected the whole time. A side flap is an idea. I haven't used that version so I would be interested in which type people prefer to use.

Is there really a market for this?

I would have to see a different mockup of this, but I like the concept. I am not so sure I like your price point for it though..

I am confused by the mock up. Can you explain the one on the right?
The one on the right is an open view with the flap open. Sorry I am not the best artist.
