I have another idea. What if connecting the drive to a computer would give you a list of options. It could tell you if the bluetooth key is near you. It would allow you to use the key to access the files. Or maybe there could be an override option that lets you lets you insert a unique key that comes with the drive. You can use this feature to get the exact distance of the bluetooth key or maybe get a google maps location.
Maybe it could give you an estimate of your distance from the flash drive. So the number of beeps a second could tell you how far away it is. I don't think a screen would be very helpful.
Basically you want to make this product:
http://www.keyringer.com/
But have it automatically signal when the two transmitters are separated by more than 20 feet.
With an automatic alarm, I can see where parents would clip this to their kids also...
I would find an alternative to Bluetooth. BT is one of the most insecure means of communication. This would be a device that could very easily be hacked, so if your priority is security over convenenience, I would find an alternate method.
Just to clarify, I meant an RFID tag which would attach to the USB drive and a "beeper" or alarm of some sort which would attach to a phone, wallet, glasses... Basically, it beeps if it can't locate the USB drive and/or the USB drive is "X" feet away. This item would be very handy for anything which you don't want to lose. set of keys, cellphone, wallet, or mp3 player would all have to remain close enough together so that they wouldn't get lost.

Just add a flash drive chip to it and make it more affordable. The thing can be tracked over the net using Google maps. How cool is that? It just lacks the ability to store data.

www.bluenio.com
but on a flash drive, Its a good diea.
I really like the product and can see how it can step straight into the market for security flash drives and stand out like a sore thumb.
If there is any type of project ongoing for this I would like to be updated.
