I am a Podiatrist in Chicago and if there is one thing I know...its the foot! I propose an orthotic (a shoe insert) that is primarily sand!
The Problem
Over 80% of people will have a foot problem in their lifetime. So many of these foot problems are due to accommodations that we make within our foot biomechanics and gait (the way our body moves and the way we walk). Simply put, we compensate (we change the way we walk due to our surroundings). If our foot and ankle is held in physiological neutral, it is the optimum position. So to do so, many podiatrists, like myself, recommend orthotics (shoe inserts) which are very expensive! I propose a cheaper alternative that utilizes one of the most basic principles that almost everybody knows, walking on sand feels good.
The Solution
I propose making orthotics which are low profile, and incorporate sand as the principal support system. No plastics needed....too rigid. The key here as well is the need for orthotics for diabetic patients. Diabetes is rampant right now, and many times the patients develop peripheral neuropathy, rather, they lose feeling in their extremities. These people need to distribute their body weight more evenly as in to avoid getting ulcerations. The thousands of grains of sand will provide distribution of sheer forces and decrease the likely hood of ulcerations, and the mold-able, redistributable nature of the sand will provide support.
So the product will be a soft, top cover (a soft rubber), that is over sand (which is fully contained in this "bladder-like" housing, with a more rigid bottom. It will not be super thick, and that isn't really necessary. It will fit into the shoe, and when the person walks on it, it will be like they are walking on sand. It will provide support, and allow the full bottom of the foot to be in contact with the device, to evenly distribute force. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD, I BELIEVE THIS PRODUCT COULD HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE!
