Magic Fingers!

Project Complete!

Project Brief

Product Design: Industrial Design

Time to design Product 27. Review our designs and submit your own as well.

Recap:
We all have tons of pens lying around, mostly occupying often used drawers, or being stacked in some sort of funny cup-like holder… Either way it’s a messy gang, most of them being cheap (usually promotional) biros, many of them dried up.

To help maintain an overview of this Pen-o-mania, the disPENser is an outcome. It’s no more than a thin (plastic or cardboard?) container, holding the pens in a neat orderly vertical fashion. The pens are stacked on top of eachother, and when needed, you just grab the bottom one. When finished writing, put the pen back at the top, and this way all pens are used through time, instead of only the ones being nearby.

This is less a "dispenser" and more of a piece of functional art.

Soft silicone tentacles grip any pencil, pen, or similar object. This holder allows for random access of any instrument you would like to use. The "dispenser" will work in any orientation: hung on a wall, placed flat on a desk, or standing up.

For drama, lighting could be incorporated and will allow the tentacles to glow.

To illustrate the concept, I rendered the design with a polished aluminum holder, but it could be any material. I envision various sizes and shapes, or the ability to join units together for long blocks, or large square, etc. Or the tentacle holder could be flexible, allowing the owner to create their own freeform sculpture.

This device can also hold business cards, an iPod or iPhone, a deck of Post-Its, or pretty much anything that would fit in the slot.

The fingers are very flexible and will not harm any surface. The tentacles could be molded in any color, or you could purchase different color inserts.

just a few of the comments that caught me:

    From the designer Brad:

    That is brilliant Brad

"Dishwasher safe is a great idea. Artists will love it. Think of the artist's brushes always falling off a table. Wonderful idea for small children and their crayons. Stick w/ this idea"

My fiance draws, paints and crafts. She said the exact same thing Becky.

"Super design. Clean concept that can be another set of hands for from pen holders to mechanics tools."

Mechanics tools, I love it. The uses for this product are endless.

This would also be awesome for cable management, as well as pens...

I really like the aesthetics of this holder. Anyway you look at it, a pen holder is going to be a "gadget." I don't know anyone who doesn't mind having a mug full of pens, but I do know that a design like this would persuade people to make the pen-accessory purchase.

This is a major change in Edwin's original idea.

Although still a great idea, I agree with Edwin above.
    Sorry Brad.

I love this idea too - I really want something good looking that could hold lots of things - pens, pencils, crayons - I like that this would keep the items from banging into each other. I would skip the lighting idea - go with simple and dishwasher safe would be awesome.

Although I do like it, I still think this is more of a gadget than a functional product. And yes, gadgets can be appealing, but always to a smaller amount of people than a functional product. I'm thinking numbers and revenue here...

I can think of tons of things to do w/ this product. Dishwasher safe is a great idea. Artists will love it. Think of the artist's brushes always falling off a table. Wonderful idea for small children and their crayons. Stick w/ this idea.
