What about putting an alarm in case it starts boiling?

I think this product is a solution looking for a problem. This product essentially makes your pot 'bigger'. So why not just use a bigger pot? Or better yet just not fill your pot up so much?

With that being said, I do think this product will sell though... there are lots of similar types of products at Bed Bath & Beyond etc. :D

@Mike - I don't disagree with you. However, creating a new type of pot is not something I don't think quirky would do and it is certainly something I would never be able to do on my own. I've thought of a million ways how to approach this with no best solution. Cooks will be cooks -- good and bad -- we will all, at at some point, experience boil over. I've tried the ring of olive oil and the wooden spoon, both with inconsistent results (with the spoon working better than the EVOO). The real solution is always being a smart cook and never turn your back on a pot of boiling starch....

Sorry to use Black Hat thinking: http://bit.ly/dfVkCk
But I believe there's a catch-22 here that if people have enough foresight to want to buy this product, then they'd have equal foresight to use less water, watch it more religiously, or implement free, at-home solutions: http://bit.ly/aBY57L

Maybe a different approach is not to catch the boil-over, but prevent it: If it can be researched what about a ring of olive-oil around the top of the pot stops the bubbles, then you can develop a whole pot where you ring the top of the pot with a layer of permanent anti-bubble material.

Why didn't I think of that!?! Cleaning my flat top range has got to be worse than cleaning my vinyl floor and I get down on the floor to do that! I look forward to seeing this product on the market.

@Loo - Thank you for the feedback. When I came up with this idea, I had the same conclusion. As I've previously stated, if we can come up with a way to make the stove top unit adjustable, this could work.

The biggest problem is that people boil stuff on MANY different sizes of pots. Each with different circumferences at the top. Therefore, your product would have to accommodate these many different types of pots.

Extremely difficult in my opinion, a huge amount of investment is needed to cover all those different pots, O boy!

As Joao said, it solves a problem and fits a need. Nice job, Sandra and good luck!

Again, i like it. Its affordable, helps to solve a problem, it has to be adjustable and foldable.

    Voted.

You can find spring loaded pans.
they are longer than the pan will be with over lapping ends that come past one another..
the same Idea will work here.
overlap the ends use an attached strap and buckle on the area flat against the pan.
I think the silicone will hold without ridges but maybe not.
It could be too slippery but I don't think so.
This would probably do for the pie tin although you may have to make a long bevel on the inside end, as silicone is thicker than the steel.

For the liquid I think you will need a long beveling of the inside end to hold the water in. also as water will leak through the crack given half a chance you may need to angel the inner edge down away from the lid at the end to increase sealing the crack.
I don't see any way to avoid a crack without a stretch material or form fitting each pot.
