It's no wonder that the iPad was inexpensive, they seem to need a whole lot of extra's just to make them practical. Looks nice, but looks alot like a desktop monitor or the back side of a lap top. Maybe look at just the cradle only that can be attached to something portable.

    I need this!

I have an iPad on my desk - it definitely has a purpose there.

Because of the phenomenal battery life, I don't have it plugged in very often, usually only for syncing. I don't want an apple stand, no need for a keyboard, if I did need one I'd use a bluetooth model.

This stand has a place in the kitchen, on a coffee or side table, on the mantle (picture frame), etc.

I've been sketching a similar (but totally different) stand, so please don't be offended if I submit it one day, or if this wins, I'll send in my contribution. Good Luck!

Cheers. I very pleased my feeling of this being useful wasn't wrong :)

The Apple Dock sits on a desk and only supports portrait orientation of the iPad.

If the DeskDock could pivot between portrait and landscape, that would be a big WIN.

The USB ports could be passthrough power-only non-data ports powered by a standard 10W iPad charger, so you could charge an iPhone or iPod.

Yup, I think so too. Landscape is a far more natural field of view for the eye. So I think this would be very comfortable if your using the iPad over a longer period of time. I'd was instanly irritated by Apple's portrait dock. AND this would make a nice little TV for the kitchen or bedroom in combination with eyeTV.

Apple has this already.... The Dock with keyboard. So unless you have a BT keyboard already this serves no purpose.

If this is going to ever fly it needs to be simpler. Charging only if anything...otherwaise make it really simple...

A need application would be a "holder" case that then has places to attach the case to different ways of holding it. Call it the iPad mounting system. Include the case and then sell things like a VESA mount....refrigerator mount... desk mount (Like yours) .... Car mount.... dash board mount... wall mount.... Anything else you can thinks of.

I know that there is a keyboard dock by Apple. That is the whole point. Who wants to invest in a second keyboard if you already own one? This way you can charge, listen to musik and us your OLD keyboard. And if you own a desktop computer, you do not need to have two keyboards (your computer's keyboard and the apple dock keyboard) on your desk. Just plug in the one you already own.

I just put my reply to Jon's very useful comments up here, so everybody can see it. Here it is:
Yes, that was the idea! Maybe I wrote it down in a confusing way, but the main idea (aside the one to make it more comfortable to use when writing) was to not have a second keyboard (concerning the keyboard dock by Apple) qnd all the other extensions. That is a waste of space and money. There actually IS a video (VGA, miniport or whatever) plannend (Take a look at the left side of the stand in the scribble i did). The SD Card slot is a VERY goog idea! That should definitely be in there! I did not know that there was a desktop extension app. That would be another awesome possbility!
Just to make myself clear: This device has to major ideas, first to be a HUB to connect all the stuff you would need extra sepperate connectors for, and second to make it more usable as a desktop device for writing mails or longer text documents.
So, if you put your focus on the first part, this would be a very useful "connection/charging" HUB, wouldn't it?

I explored this line of thought as well. The iPad is not a desktop oriented device. I agree with Jayson. THe stand would most definitely be useful in setting it up next to your imac when you use the desktop extension app though. and it WOULD keep it charged. Lose the USB unless it is meant for camera connectivity, add a SD cardslot for the same and throw on a VGA adapter to put it on a bigger screen at 1024x768. Basically combine all tthe little dongles they have now into a stand. Then you might be talking.

The USB ports would be a huge hurdle, as Apple provides no hardware support for such an interface, nor will they allow developers access to the parts of the OS necessary to enable USB peripherals at this point.

The stand places the iPad in an uncomfortable position for its main mode of input - multitouch.

It's an inventive and well-drawn idea, but seems to be trying to turn the iPad into something it's not.

True, Apple is very strict concerning these matters, but since there IS a Keboard connectable via their 30 pin connector and ther IS an USB adapter to connect a digital camera to the iPad, it has to be possible to use the same way to connect a USB HUB connected to a keyboard and a digital camera, don't you think?
Concerning your second point: True, it is easier to have the iPad on your lap to use multitouch, but since the stand is not that high and the cradle can be tilted u can still use it in a comfortable way i think. Don't forget, the major idea of this is writing emails or text documents. Apple provides a dock with a keyboard where you cannot change the angle an in that is concerning this far more unconfortable to use as a multitouch device.
