magnetic polarity attraction in wood blocks
loose magnets that can spin are set loose into prepared niches in the wood block -
core is snapped in; then glued wood dowel permanently joins the two pieces -
no glue gets on the magnets and it is almost impossible for a child to dis-assemble-
blocks act and feel as standard wood blocks but will cling to each other and refrigerators etc

What would be the cost of machining all of these wooden parts and assembling the blocks? How much more expensive would it be to make the blocks out of wood?
Michael did a great job to source some magnet to give a cost on idea that had seemed prohibitively expensive. Jerome, your turn.
Is there anyone out there with expertise that could give Jerome a hand?
Wood is an inexpensive renewable material that is not toxic (in fact it contains anti-bacterial properties) has been used for toys for centuries, is hard to destroy and is biodegradible into fertilizer - simple, automatic machines shape it and can probably assemble it - consider how cheap wood blocks are - or complex wood 3D puzzles for that matter - it is one of nature's great materials! It is warm to the touch and has that living spirit that is compatible with the human body;its strength to weight ratio ia excellent - in the dry climate of a home it will last a lifetme; it can be carved or plain, stained colors, or sealed with clear non-toxic resin or wax - I can't think of any plastic or metal that would do the job better.
This is the way to incorporate Michael's free floating magnet idea to wooden blocks. I just assume that it would be easier and cheaper to use injection molding techniques, so wood may not work.
However, I do like wood and would be happy to see a design like this one win.
