A low cost folding bike basket. Will quickly disassemble and stow in a narrow triangular bag that attaches inside any common bike frame.
The Problem
Many times when people commute on a bicycle they find themselves unable to transport unexpected items. How many times have you seen someone outside a Whole Foods trying to figure out a way to fit their groceries into a messenger bag? The obvious solution is for these people to mount a basket, panniers or bring a trailer. But an urban cyclist doesn’t want all this clutter and worry that it might get stolen. Plus these new urban bikes are stylish and these storage fixtures are not cool looking. What I am proposing would store inconspicuously and always be there if it was needed. Moreover, it could be sold at a low price point in places like Whole Foods, just like reusable bags. It could be manufactured from exclusively repurposed material and if designed carefully would be chic.
The Solution
The solution is a foldable basket that would fit into a triangular pouch. This pouch would mount inside any standard bike frame between the top and seat tube (see attached drawing). The main load carrying structure would attach to the seat pole. This would consist of an aluminum clamp and square tubing. Then a platform with a base dimension of two standard reusable bags would attach to the support tube. This platform would fold diagonally for storage. Atop the platform would be removable canvas walls that attach to the platform with rigid posts at each corner. The canvas would also have a net or tie-downs for items inside to be secured. Finally the basket is stabilized with telescoping supports that connect from the chainstay to the back corners of the basket. These supports would be adjustable in length such that they could accommodate different frame types.
I also see this general concept being applied as a small trailer, a front basket, or panniers.
Key Features
- It is temporary and would be attached or removed in less than a minute, and it stores neatly with the bike.
- The design also enables it to be very low cost .
- The simple design and utility would enable it to be marketed in a wide retail space, generally where bike commuters buy things, thus enabling more items to be purchased on a spontaneous shopping excursion.
- Many bike accessories are easily stolen, but this product stores in a compact fashion and it could easily be taken with the rider.
- The bike commuter market is exploding right now, and people are looking for accessories that will enable them to manage their day-to-day activities.
