How would you release them from the rib when you were done and attach it to the next without eventually getting you fingers dirty? Am I missing something?
I thought of a few variations, like the mentioned sprint loaded option, or chip like clip, many great ideas for sure. If this were inexpensive enough, restaurants would give them out like chopsticks. Hoping to convey my message better, these would have to be cheap and easy to make. Like the staple remover mentioned earlier. thx :) love this site !
In Japan many people will avoid eating something if it means their hands touching the food, especially if it's greasy or sticky. You would need something at both ends because the turning moment would be too large for a one-ended grabber. But a male/female version where the male end is more like a corn-on-the-cob holder could work well. I'm sure there are other cultures that don't like licking their fingers too.
Sorry, but this sounds too much like a tool found in an 1800's surgery room. How about disposable gloves called ribbers...like when you go out to have crab you get a bib. Now you get colorful ribbers and momma's like all happy and the kids can blow em up and stuff.
Great idea..I want to buy two sets right now. My thought make them about 25-30% larger than a spring loaded staple remover with similar but smaller and more aggressive teeth. Textured grip to avoid slipping out of hand when those juicy ribs start flowing. Cheap and easy to make like the staple remover and costs about $.75 - $1. Check out the office depot staple remover here: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/127270/Office-Depot-Brand-Staple-Removers-Assorted/ Grip-type staple removers have plastic easy-grip wings constructed of high-impact plastic and metal. Lifts staples out easily. My is see through red plastic. Called it the "Rib-It" Grip-type Rib Grabber that has plastic easy-grip wings constructed of high-impact plastic and metal. Grabs ribs easily and dishwasher approved.
I like the spring-loaded clip idea... but I still think that given the number of units needed to make any money, it would sort of be an uphill battle to educate the consumer as to what the heck they do.
Yes Josh, spring loaded clips is perfect, first thing I thought of. Just a simple, ergonomic, durable, easy to clean pair of grips, inexpensive, and it's one of those impulse items I believe will sell itself.
Instead of a caliper, think of those spring-loaded clips with toothed grips for bags of chips. You could use it to pick up any food that was too hot to eat by hand. I love ribs, and I've burned my fingers on hot bones more than once.

Nice idea. What about something like tongs/claws for eating seafood/lobster?
