Nice idea, I missed something like this when I was a bachelor. I think there will be something like this in the market, but not easy to find in the stores near me.
One thing that come to mind apart for being heat resistant is, it has to light so as to not tilt the pan due to its weight.
There are some things like this in the market. From expensive Termomix to much more cheaper options that would solve the same problem, and avoiding many of the issues listed above (supervision, heat, dishwasher,...). So I guess I wouldn't go and buy it. However, I might not be a good reference for the target.
Seems like it would be easier to just put the soup in the microwave. I'm all for being lazy but I already have a microwave and I would actually have to go out and buy this... Sorry ;0)
Add a direct-line to 911 emergency so that when you walk away from the stove, forget you're cooking, and your house catches on fire, the firemen can get there faster. :)
Kidding.
But there's a reason that people are supposed to supervise their stovetop cooking.
The easier, cheaper solution: use very low heat and a kitchen timer to remind yourself to stir your food every few minutes.
My wife uses a pot that holds boiling water that is used to steam veggies. What if you came up with a similar product to heat soups and sauces without direct heat like the boiling water or even a double bottomed pot that provided an insulation pocket for dissipating the heat a bit. No burnt soup.
"Well daniel, a few years ago, when the ipod was already on the market for many many month i could have asked you and you would have said... HUH ipod? you talking star treck?"
Jonathen, do you live in a cave? You must. Most of us knew about the ipod before it was even in the market.
Always a fan of the lazy man's inventions. In an effort to move it beyond the home, how about incorporating a crank operated power supply similar to the flashlights you operate by hand for rotating a handle for 45 seconds. This could move it into the camping crowd as well as a solution for costly batteries or the need to plug in one more item...

Good idea though.

For me i'll move the TV to the kitchen , watch something while cooking.
It is a great idea and one that could sell, though :D
