Wow, I just made the same design for one of my clients (except it was not modular). 3 Across and 3 Down, 12" x 12" ,fire engine red, and made from poplar.

I LOVE this idea... the modular capability, the colors, the styling. I wish I was in on the designing early because I think the biggest downfall on these and why there are not more precommitments is they are too small. They should have at least a 12" inside opening to be useful. I'd buy probably 1/2 dozen if that was the case.

@Michael - I think its around 20%. When Digidudes went into production, sales had stalled for a while at just over 100, and when Think Geek put in a bulk order, they ended up with more than 8% influence. they got more than 8% influence for slighly less than half the preorders needed, so I figure preorders count for 20% overall influence. Of course, this ended up leading Think Geek to be the top contributor by almost double anyone else when all they contributed was sales, but I guess thats the name of the game. If my math is correct (which it is likely not), and assuming that that 20% influence goes to presales, this means that making one presale will gain you enough influence to make $0.0032 per item sold, which means making one presale would get you $1.92 if the 600 threshold was reached. Im assuming that social sales influence comes out of this same 20%, so this means that if a few people make a ton of social sales, then everyone else would make less than $1.92 on the 600 needed to make threshold, while the people who make the social sales would make a few cents more. This is entirely speculation though, and I feel like Im missing something as far as my math is concerned.

The problem I see is the fact that people would order it, but it's not yet available. They want it now. No problem with the beamer, it should be available to ship in January. Social product web sites won't consider listing items unless they're in production. I have over 200 referrals and not a single sale. Does anyone know how much percent of influence is earned for each presale. Is there a formula? I think this knowledge would promote more personal buying influence! I know I would buy more!

Here's my tip. I've been adding myself as a follower to lots of mommies, people interested in toys, design, etc. and those people typically follow me back. I then twitter the heck out of my social media link - 2x per day - not too much to be annoying. Believe it or not, I've generated a ton of sales - esp. on the beamer. Sadly, I'm only getting about a penny for my efforts. Guess it's better than nothing. I suggest targeting designers, decorators and niche stores, etc. which can be found through twellow. Just a thought. It's a very nice product that I would like to have and I hope it gets made.

Going to something like Target without anything physical to demonstrate to them would probably just get you a weird look and a wasted afternoon, especially considering big chains already sell inexpensive modular shelfing that they can mark up way more than they paid for them. Ben says that presales are the last check of how well a product can sell before they spend a ton of money producing it. If its bombing here, that says more to the products ability to sell than someone single handedly putting this product into production themselves.

It's a shame. Sounds like Quirky (owners) are hitting the pavement by visiting companies like Best Buy. I hope they expand visits to include places like Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. in the hopes that some big box store will order a ton to reach the production level.

Not to mention the quote for moving into production is 600 units. Which likely means anyone signing up will wait a looong time before getting their shelves. I hope it moves faster!

Theyre probably not moving because theres a huge number of modular shelfing units on the market already, probably a dozen or so at Ikea alone. No matter how much "cooler" our product is, its still swimming in a massive sea of comparable products.

If you're looking to sell these, I think it would really help to put some more specifics into the product information page. Such as ... what are these made of? Wood? Plastic? Does the mounting system work on a block by block basis, so I can make any shelf shape I want? Or is it in multi-block sections? What is the final colour range going to be? Do they come flat packed, so I'll have to assemble? Or are they a solid unit? I mean, these are questions that non-quirky customers are going to want to know. I could say the same of most other products in the quirky store. Please give potential customers a little bit more information in a little more formal way.

The price is excellent compared to other wall units I've seen. A tenth of the price! The hanging system is easier as well.
