Cal Fire officials say doing that is a definite fire hazard."
I once came across an overflowing pump. Gas was everywhere. There were two dogs in a station wagon barking like crazy and there was nobody around. I ran up and turned it off, getting covered in gas in the process. I should have used the master shut off switch. Anyhow, my point is that all the warning labels won't help anyone sleep at night if this device causes a couple of kids to get burned alive. Please read the article and dump this project.

I love the idea, but clips are illegal in a number of states.
The clips are broken or missing because they have been removed from older pumps and are no longer made on newer pumps. They have been implicated in deadly explosions - - gas fumes plus static electricity caused by the moving human are a disaster and lawsuit waiting to happen.
I use a tennis ball that I found outside a tennis court. It was free and in good shape! It works great! I was told that its illegal to use a device to hold the gas pump handle. I don't know if its a state law (CT) or if its a federal law. I suggest more research on the legal angle. However, I wouldn't vote for this because many people have easy, simple solutions and wouldn't buy it.
In most cases the locking device is removed so customers are forced to hold so you don't overflow your tank or spill gas. I feel like this item may result in many lawsuits. proceed with caution.
In most cases, if the locking mechanism on the pump is missing or broken, it's for a reason. Not all pumps shut off when the tank is full. If you place an object to hold the handle on one of these pumps the gas will continue to flow even when the tank is full. If thus happens, you'll have a puddle of gas on the ground or worse. It's best not to tamper with the pump. If holding the handoe is an inconvenience you can aoways go to another gas station that has the locking mechanism on the pump.
I'd still buy it!!!
no no no on the fuel handle item. safety first...
Good thinking and congrats Melissa!
Hi Melissa. Good thinking, but unfortunately most of the legal and safety comments are legitimate. Not a bad idea, just not an idea that will be feasible and fix a problem. Keep thinking. Good visual.
