Apple Tablet, IPAD Case
Alright Quirks, we all know it’s coming, we all know when its coming. And with Apple gearing up to manufacturer a million a month we need to get ready to capitalize. My idea is to get out the gates with a funky, fresh, and functional Apple Tablet Case. My initial ideas are: • It should include some type of protective cover, to cover the screen when the tablet is not in use. The tablet has a beautiful screen, and you would hate to damage it. • It should include a detachable shoulder harness. I don’t know but I can envision people carrying these instead of bookbags and traditional computer bags, thus a nice case that you can sling on the shoulder would be cool. • I may be asking for to much but it would be cool to have a place to store the USB cord. I’m sure there’s a bunch of other stuff we can add so please comment. I know what your thinking, this is to early. Not really when you consider the time it takes to bring products to fruition, now is the time to act so that we can get a piece of the market when the Tablet is introduced. The tablet is expected to be introduced January 27th, at which point exact dimensions will be released.

Pre-ordered my iPad 64GB today, along with a case that won't get any use once the Cloak arrives. Just wanted to ensure I had a case for my trips in early April. I'd like to see a small, very small, plastic loop through which one would have an option to add a wrist strap. I use wrist straps on my cameras and they're an added sense of security and equipment safety.

Well goody for you, nah, just razzin. I found out this morning when i excitedly went online to order my 64 gig 3gs iPad that Canada doesn't count. Sure we only have the same population as California and half the sun, but what kind of uproar would you hear if they left out California from the launch. The other 31,000,000 Canadians have asked me to tell you Americans just how disappointed we are that you think so lowly of us that you have lumped us in with the third world countries for release dates. I'm coming down in April and yes, I expect an aplology.

Oh no, it does I'm just an idiot, sale back on.

Hey, I just noticed the flap doesn't fold completely back onto itself, that is a deal breaker for me as I will use my iPad as a book reader and having that cover always a little open will annoy the hell out of me.

Scott, absolutely, within two weeks there are going to be 50 of these things online. This is definitely a winner, there is nothing Quirky or weird about this product as it sits, it answers both the iPads shortcomings, it is sticky as opposed the the ipads slippy surface, and it protects that big beautiful unprotected screen. I don't see any big benefit over the apple version, it's a just a different way to do the same job. And I am torn down the middle about which one to purchase, maybe i'll just buy both and then sell the one I don't use.

For the record, I agree with Ryan Quarles' comment below: sales prospects are better if you can leverage that immediate "I just bought an iPad - I need something to protect it!" impulse with a ready-to-ship (or it'll-be-ready-next week) product.

Scott and Michael, I'm sure you are correct, my concern was I plan on carrying my ipad in my touratech pannier bags and I would worry with the inevitable vibration the stand after a while would loosen in it's holder and start to rub. I do love the slick design though and can see it being an acceptable solution for a lot of people. And the price is definitely right.

This absolutely rocks!! I already pre-ordered mine and I would've ordered more but, I just don't how many iPad's I'm actually going to be able to buy!

@Jeremy Baylis...
The design process is very thorough and I'm sure this will not be an issue, but if you would like to contact Quirky, try sending an eMail to ... questions@quirky.com

@Jeremy Baylis: I thought about this issue before I placed my preorder, having missed the design phase of the project, but a little thought suggests to me that it's not a problem. The renders show the portrait-mode kickstand folding *flush* with the cover when it's not in use. The design of this type of case requires that the border around the device is slightly raised from screen level. The combination of these two factors means that the kickstand can't come into contact with the screen under normal use. Does that help to address your concern? If I'm wrong, could someone from the project team please say so?
Jeremy Baylis 1 day ago
Just a question, does anybody from Quirky ever respond to this forum. I brought up what i thought was justifiable concern, ie: scratching the screen. How are we to know, sight unseen, that this issue has been thought about and remedied if we get no responses from our comments?

The Cloak is the most innovative iPad case I seen thus far. The Cloak doesn't need a carrying strap, or pockets for earbuds, phones, etc. Keep it slim, simple and functional, please.

Designed properly, a shallow hollow with a couple bungee type tie downs could be designed in between the two screen side flaps to hold your ear buds, maybe a pen, a USb cable for charging the device....

Why couldn't you design it with a 2 way hinge instead. Some form of clip system at the top would allow the movement you want without the traditional problems standard stands always have. They are always a weak point and never work as proposed. Make the cover a two piece with a hinge for the landscape on the first flap and the inner now outer flap hinged at the top of the outer then when opened inner flap. This might add the tiniest bit of width to the cover but the usability would be worth it.

I've got one major concern about the Cloak. The stand has to be made of a less forgiving substance than rubber. For it to have the structural rigidity to act as a stand the material would have a to have a fairly high hardness rating, this being on the inside, screen side it will be in contact with the screen, and looks like it has the potential to rub, thus scratching the thing it's supposed to be protecting. How do you address this issue?
