Digits

Stay Warm, Stay Connected

View This Product's Development History

Don’t let the cold keep you from your connections! Quirky’s Digits are mini conductive pins that attach to gloves so you can use electronic touch screen devices, even when it’s below zero.

Here’s how it works:

- Pin the Digit to one (or several) of your glove’s tips.

- The Digit pierces the glove, making direct contact with your finger.

- This connection carries a small amount of electricity through the metal backing to the Digit’s face, which is made of conductive fabric.

- The conductive fabric triggers the mechanism on the touch screen.

Digits come in packs of four pins. Depending on the type of touch screen device, you can use this product as a set on multiple fingers, or as a single unit.

You can just sew conductive thread into your gloves. You can get the thread easily because it is just wire from old headphones. You can see my how to video here. These pin things look horribly bulky and annoying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTnuyJ-g7sE

I agree with Mr. Clevenger, Tolman and Stowers: a) promo images make it seem like you have to buy a hideous pair of gloves to get the desired effect b) even if they are detachable, you have an uncomfortable pin that your finger has to wobble over to manipulate your smart phone, making your "Digits" rather clumsy and useless. Also, do they scratch the screen? c) demographic: many people who own smart phones possibly own nice gloves they don't want to pin or otherwise destroy. I think the best solution is conductive thread sewn into designer/high price point gloves. Otherwise, I feel fingerless gloves would still be preferable to these objects.

Just saw in Make Magazine a simple solution of using conductive thread to sew within gloves to give this functionality. Using thread would probably be a better and cheaper idea.

Suggestion on marketing. The main image has made me think these weren't add on buttons but rather gloves that I had to purchase and feel silly wearing. I don't think I would mind attaching these things to my own gloves that are black leather... Just thinking the pre-sales could use some help and I certainly had the wrong idea about this product until I looked at its history...

Can you possibly show a video of someone using the buttons to text. You show a picture but that does not relate the usability for texting which is going to be the biggest if only market for this product.

Looks like a simple fabric covered button (you can buy kits at a good sewing / upholstery store), I worry that it might be too loose on the fingers which would get caught on objects.

Would it be a posiblity to add this to a pair of gloves and sell them together as a package?

Brian Shy, you say there is no metal in conductive thread/fabric. Please point me to a referance for this. I have searched tirelessly and everything I have found on conductive thread mentions wire/metal. What other material conducts electromagnetic pulses?

Unfortunately I probably will not buy this due to the design.. I wear leather gloves and the thought of piercing them is not something that I would do.

My Opinion: Seems like a great stocking stuffer gift at the least. I would definitely use these as I like to listen to my iPod while hiking. I prefer using different gloves for different times of the year, and would love to be able to just switch the buttons whenever I wanted. Design Ideas: I think the optimum fabric to use with these would be nylon or vinyl, with the small metal pieces underneath.

Very cool idea. I can see this being very big if you end up selling to glove companies as well, at wholesale for this "system." What would be nice is if this conductor could "snap" on/off, with a place to store it, like near the wrist. Btw, is it malleable or rigid? I think that's key when thinking about doing tasks in these gloves. Good luck, -A

Hi Brian, Great invention but could definitely see it attached to an elastic ring size band, sort of like the finger stylus attachemnt for the Nintendo DS. I've used it and could totally see this working the same way. Easy to move from glove to glove for the winter/colder months and can also be used in any other time of year if a person wants to minmize finger prints. =) Good job!

In testing this, did your screen show any wear? I would be a little hesitant if I thought the product would in any way scratch the surface.

these will work great with the ipad. Since the next generation will all be carrying one around.

Perfect for commuters in cold climates. Yes- your fingers might get a bit chilly right on that spot, but it is better than having to take your glove on and off just to answer a call. I think if it was under $5 I would buy it.
