Head of Customer Service - Schenectady

The Company

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.
We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

We exist to solve that problem.
http://www.quirky.com/

We are thrilled to be opening our new call center in Schenectady, NY and we’re looking for a kick-ass Head of Customer Service to join our team.

The Problem

Let’s talk about why customer service usually sucks:

  • No follow up: customers know that when they call they can’t let the rep off the phone, because if they do they won’t get resolution until the 23rd Century.
  • Stupid computers: customers speak their order numbers and a bad voice recognition program screws with them for 10 minutes before saying, “I’m having trouble understanding you, let me get you someone who can help.” That’s bullshit.
  • Tech support people treat you like an idiot, making you do all the stuff you already did. Yes, thank you, I did try turning it off and on already -- about a million times. Can’t you please just help me?
  • The reps aren’t steeped in the company’s culture. They don’t have a clue. They just want to get rid of the people calling and interrupting them so they can go back to listening to Celine Dion.
  • We don’t like Celine Dion.

The Candidate

  • You’ve been working in customer service, throwing down and hauling ass supervising a call center, and you know how to do it ten times better. You’re dying to work for the company that will let you do that.
  • Reporting to the Head of Community, the Head of Customer Service will build a team in Schenectady driving 24/7, out-of-this-world service to our customers. We’re looking for someone fun, extroverted, LOUD – that’s right, we play Ke$ha, we give each other hugs and high-fives. We welcome a dynamic, high energy, larger-than-life personality who isn’t afraid to take our customer experience to the next level.
  • We have a wonderful customer service department in place and it’s growing so fast we’re giving the team its own space. You will be in charge of scaling up the team further and ensuring its ongoing awesomeness. We need you to build us the best customer service call center ever in Schenectady. Yes, you must live there or be willing to.
  • Was your reaction, “best customer service call center ever, that’s easy because they all suck and mine will rule,” then apply for this position. Otherwise, go away.

The Responsibilities

  • You are a master communicator that coaches, forecasts, manages schedules and develops an exciting career path for our team members.
  • You have a do-whatever-it-takes mentality in going above and beyond customer expectations.  You work nights or weekends to get the job done.
  • Communicate and present your team’s work appropriately to the company and community.
  • Leverage data in a way that informs your decisions to change or grow.  You understand metrics and how they are related to customer service process.
  • Manage the following processes: refunds and returns, fraud, domestic and international shipping, website troubleshooting, product technical support.

The Application

Check us out at www.quirky.com. Register if you have not already done so. Spend some time on our site/app understanding what we do. If you like what you see, and you’re ready to blow customers away, please write a personal cover letter to Jason Medley telling him why you're perfect for this job.

  • You not only write well; you are obsessed with writing (did we just use that semicolon incorrectly? You tell us!) You love nothing more than to share words with the world
  • Your skills are equally distributed across social media platforms: blogging, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and ones nobody else has heard of yet
  • You write equally well in long (multi-part blog narratives, documentation) and short (tweets, haiku) forms
  • You love consumer products, design, and inventing
  • You can identify interesting and relevant articles, books, speeches, conferences, movies, etc, on related topics to share with our community
  • You thrive in an entrepreneurial environment

  • You have an unrelenting intellectual curiosity and take pride in doing awesome work
  • You have a passion for what we are doing at Quirky

The Qualifications:

  • Experience working on major brands, and have excellent design skills across a variety of
    disciplines (packaging, platform, retail etc)
  • Experience managing a team of 10+ people
  • Must have a killer portfolio with real world solutions that are both thought provoking
and business savvy. We are not looking for decorators here!
  • Must have a masterful understanding of design -- both cutting edge trends and classic principles
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or a related field... or a cool dropout story!
  • At least 10 years experience designing, with at least 5 years in a lead or managing role
  • Must be able to work on multiple projects at once while hitting aggressive deadlines
  • Must be creative, independent, and able to see a creative project from idea conceptualization through to final execution
  • Must be aware of production techniques and should be able to coordinate with vendors
  • Must be quirky. Duh.

We’re looking for an amazing and passionate Project Manager to join our team in NYC.

The Candidate:

You are passionate about Quirky, and building new products. You get excited about design and manufacturing, just as much as you get excited about excel spreadsheets and crunching numbers. You are super organized, and enjoy plotting out your own as well as other peoples’ schedules. You are a deal hunter, always looking for ways to save money and cut expenses. As a point of contact between manufacturers and key stakeholders in the NYC office, you are relied on for your communication skills, your honesty, and your ability to admit when things go wrong. In your conversations you get to the point quickly, and know how to tune the content of your conversation to the people around you. You love getting down to the details, but you also know how to see and communicate the bigger picture.  You like to keep it brief at all times and get to the bottom of things quickly; afterall, your schedule is packed (you prefer it that way). You are constantly thinking of ways to make the Quirky wheels run more quickly and efficiently. You live in the NYC area, but you work in two different time zones (New York and China). You are always checking your email and you are accessible at all times. You have a way with people, and prefer collaboration to independent research. You thrive in an environment where there are no walls and prefer to over-communicate and think out loud, raising concerns and bouncing ideas off of others at any time.

The Job:

As our Project Manager, you will

  • Be a member of Quirky's Product team reporting to Quirky's Head of Project Management

  • Manage all products falling within our App-Enabled Product Line

  • Act as the main source for updates and communication regarding product development, production & manufacturing, partners, and vendors

  • Be a part of a growing movement to make invention accessible.

The Responsibilities:

  • Manage all products & production from the time an invention idea is submitted to products shipped for sale

  • Keep track of and communicate all important production information for more new and existing Quirky products (information ranges from materials for product and packaging, to vendor selection, production costs, scheduling, payment terms, and more)

  • Manage complex schedules with dependencies

  • Collaborate with overseas team and 3rd party auditor to qualify new overseas manufacturers

  • Oversee all aspects of the Design and Engineering process for new product development.

  • Work with Quirky’s sourcing team and Project Management team overseas to determine which manufacturer gets awarded the project.

  • Review product line quotes to determine cost saving measures

  • Build strong partnerships with existing and new suppliers

  • Communicate with manufacturers to negotiate pricing, payment terms, tooling and production schedules, to handle payment of invoices, and more.

  • Troubleshoot production issues, seeking decisions from key stakeholders as needed

  • Oversee tight development schedules through a team effort

  • Scrutinize product quality, analyze quality control reports, and review customer feedback, in detail, to determine if corrective action is needed

  • Manage multiple product development schedules and work independently

  • Maintain a design-oriented culture with a focus on bringing the best ideas to market with the best quality

  • Work closely with Demand Planning to understand the timing of when product is needed

  • Work closely with the General Manager of Power Products to ensure product specifications meet consumer needs

  • Work closely with Finance, and Sales teams to make sure that stakeholders have the most up-to-date information regarding pricing, timelines, and product specifications

The Qualifications:

  • 5+ years work experience as a Project Manager for App-enabled Consumer Electronics and/or Embedded Software Devices (phones, tablets, etc)

  • Must demonstrate full Product Development Lifecycle experience

  • Background in mechanical engineering, consumer products, product development, or industrial design are pluses but not required

Sr Electrical Engineer – Digital & Analog Systems - San Francisco Bay Area

The Company:

We are Quirky.

We make invention accessible.
We believe that the best ideas in the world aren’t actually in the world--they’re locked in people’s heads.

Quirky brings new consumer products to market every week.  Some of the best industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing experts come together to take ideas from concept to prototype - then to mass production - at a pace others said wasn’t possible.

Today you’ll find Quirky’s products on the shelves of major retailers such as Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Best Buy.

The Candidate:

A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.

You’ll participate in early brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in the design.  Your engineering knowledge comes from prior products you’ve shipped along with a constant curiosity to evaluate new dev boards, modules, reference designs, and technologies.

As a product idea takes shape, you’re comfortable quickly iterating on proof-of-concept prototypes.  These prototypes will help the team evaluate risk, build a development schedule, and determine market interest in the product.

In execution mode, you’ll drive component selection, draw-up schematics, and participate in the peer-review of other designs from the team.  You will then take your design through to PCB layout.  With each PCB rev, you’ll be instrumental in board bring-up and debugging.

After a year at Quirky, you’ll be able to walk through a major retail store and point to a dozen products that you helped bring to market.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in embedded hardware design – preferably in consumer products
  • A history of reliable, shipping products
  • Both 8 and 32-bit embedded design experience
  • Experience interfacing sensors and subsystems over I2C, SPI, DMA, UARTs, and USB.
  • Proficient with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, communication bus scopes, etc.
  • Will take concepts through initial schematic design and PCB layout/routing.  (Altium Designer experience a plus)
  • Prior experience doing PCB layout that isolates power zones and minimizes noise/interference.
  • Comfortable context switching between a simple 8-bit design to complex 32-bit projects with wireless technologies, displays, or embedded Linux – all in the same week.

This isn’t one of those mind-teaser interview questions; it’s an example of the real challenges we’re faced with everyday at Quirky.

You’ve built new QA teams from scratch – coming up with new processes unique to each organization, and filling the team with the right skills and personalities.
